Superior performance is what sets the 2019 Audi S5 apart. With the ability to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in well under 5.0 seconds, the S5 shows its tailpipes to a lot of sports cars. The S5’s lavishly appointed cabin and impressive range of technology are actually typical Audi benefits.
The 2019 S5 is a compact luxury car. It’s available in three body styles, including a five-door Sportback with seating for five. Seating for four is standard in the coupe and convertible body styles, the latter of which is known as the Cabriolet. The Premium trim level is the base model and offered for the Sportback and the coupe. There are also Premium Plus and Prestige trims for all body styles. The standard powertrain for the S5 combines a turbocharged V6 engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
The Audi A5 provides similar equipment but with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The Audi RS 5 relies on a twin-turbo V6 to become an S5 supercar.
Designers have given the S5 a sprinter’s stance that’s emphasized by a distinctive shoulder line. The line gently curves over the wheels and stretches to connect the headlights to the taillights along the S5’s body. The sheet metal over the hood also swells into a curve for a powerful appearance. The 2019 Audi S5 Sportback is distinguished by a roof-hinged liftgate. A power-retractable soft roof is standard for the S5 Cabriolet. The dramatic roofline of the S5 Coupe makes it look like an upscale German muscle car.
The S5 Premium models have standard LED headlights LED taillights, mirror-mounted LED turn signals, a panoramic sunroof, heated power-adjustable mirrors, dual chrome-tipped exhaust outlets and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. A power tailgate is standard for the Sportback, which offers a hands-free tailgate as an option. The S5 is further available with 19- and 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and a hands-free trunk or tailgate. An optional Black Optic package is reserved for the Sportback and Coupe models. This bundles high-gloss black mirror caps, black titanium exterior trim and matte titanium-finished wheels. The S5 has new wheel options.
Stretching nearly all the way across the dash, the S5’s horizontal climate-vent slats add a touch of structured sophistication to the cabin. They’re like pinstripes on an elegant suit. Those straight lines also make a stylish contrast with the flowing visor-look hood over the instrument panel. The S5 can be relatively practical, too, especially in its Sportback setup. That supplies standard 40/20/40-split folding rear seats with 21.8 cubic feet of storage capacity. Folding the back seats can expand the S5 Sportback’s rear cargo space to 35 cubic feet. The Coupe and Cabriolet have trunk capacities of 11.6 and 7.3 cubic feet, respectively.
Leather and Alcantara seating surfaces are standard with diamond stitching, heated 12-way power-adjustable front seats, front-seat massage functions, tri-zone automatic climate control, aluminum inlays, stainless steel pedal caps, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with a flat bottom. The S5 offers options such as climate-controlled front seats, heated rear seats, carbon-style inlays and a heated steering wheel with a conventionally shaped rim.
A turbocharged 3.0-liter is standard for the S5 and delivers 349 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard as well. In the quickest, coupe body style, that powertrain lets you get from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. So the S5 Coupe is about 20% quicker than the 2019 Audi A5 Coupe.
Both hard-topped S5 body styles have fuel economy ratings of 21/30 mpg city/highway. The drop-top loses a single mpg in highway driving.
The Audi S5 matches its potent turbo engine to a standard sport suspension. As a result, the S5 is a double threat that can carve the corners as well as it cruises the highway. You can also sharpen the S5’s reflexes with the available sport package. It includes a sport-tuned rear differential and an adaptive suspension.
Standard technology for the S5 includes a 7-inch infotainment display, a 7-inch instrument-panel display, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, HD Radio, an SD-card reader, two USB ports, a CD player and a 10-speaker audio system. Audi provides tech options like a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a head-up display, wireless charging, a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, a navigation system, an 8.3-inch display, a touchpad controller, handwriting recognition and a 20-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.
Driver-assistance features such as automatic forward emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection and a rearview camera are standard. The S5 is also available with adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, automatic parking assistance, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure alert, lane-keeping assistance, an occupant-exit warning, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera system and front and rear parking sensors.
