The 2019 BMW M4 is the two-door alternative to the four-door M3. It’s the top performer in the 4 Series line, with a quicker engine and added handling prowess. It features specific styling touches inside and out and affords added exclusivity. The M4 is available in either a coupe or convertible body style, with the latter being especially alluring when the temperatures turn warm. Either version delivers unbridled enjoyment on either an open or twisty road.
The BMW M4 is the sportiest expression of the automaker’s 4 Series. It seats four and is available in coupe and convertible configurations. It comes powered by a willing twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine, with a manual transmission standard and an optional dual-clutch automatic. It’s only offered with rear-wheel drive. The M4 competes with other top two-doors like the Audi TTS, Cadillac ATS-V Coupe and the Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 Coupe and Cabriolet.
The BMW M4 includes a new limited edition CS coupe for the 2019 model year with added horsepower and assorted performance-style upgrades.
The 2019 BMW M4 looks much like a BMW M3 with two doors instead of four. Here, however, there’s the option of having either a closed roof or a convertible top. There’s BMW’s trademark kidney-shaped grille up front with narrow LED headlights that reach up and into the front fenders. The exterior is otherwise largely uncluttered and features a tallish rear-end. It rides on 18-inch V-spoke grey alloy wheels.
Auto-dimming side mirrors and auto off-on headlamps are standard. Adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams are available as part of the optional Executive Package. Other exterior options include a power moonroof, a black front grille, a carbon-fiber rear spoiler and various 18-, 19- and 20-inch alloy wheel choices.
As with most BMW models, the M4’s interior is tastefully designed with high-quality materials. It’s upholstered in a combination of cloth and leather surfaces and features carbon fiber trim with high gloss black chrome accents. Assorted leather treatments are optional. The dashboard features analog controls for the climate and audio systems, with a rotary dial-control on the center console and a widescreen display for the car’s “iDrive” infotainment system. The front seats are sufficiently roomy, but rear seat legroom is tight.
Standard interior items include power sport seats with adjustable lumbar support and side bolsters, heated front seats, automatic climate control and ambient cabin lighting. Options include a heated steering wheel, power rear sunshade, stainless steel pedals and a choice of wood or aluminum trim. The convertible can be fitted with an optional neck warmer for use on cooler days.
Like other BMW M-designated models, the M4 coupe and M4 convertible accelerate aggressively and handle the curves tenaciously. The standard engine is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder that sends a quick 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. It’s good for a 0-60 mph time of 4.0 seconds. The optional Competition Package bumps the output to 444 horses. The CS version brings 454 horsepower, which enables a 0-60 sprint in a speedy 3.8 seconds. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic optional.
The BMW M4 is rated for fuel economy at 18/25-mpg city/highway, which is reasonable for a car having all that power.
The BMW M4 features sport-tuned power steering and rides on an adaptive suspension that affords precise handling abilities while maintaining a reasonably smooth ride. The M4 CS is more aggressive in nature with specially tuned braking, steering, suspension, transmission and dynamic stability control, along with 20-inch wheels and run-flat performance tires. Available upgrades include carbon-ceramic brakes and the M Driver’s Package. The latter includes an increased top-speed limiter and a day at a BMW performance driving school in South Carolina or California.
The 2019 BMW M4 offers a long list of convenience, safety and connectivity features. Standard items include a 16-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system with navigation, satellite and HD radio, voice commands, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay interfaces. Keyless entry/start, a garage-door opener transceiver, a backup camera, parking assistance and adaptive cruise control also come as standard. Also included are lane-departure and forward-collision warning systems with forward auto-braking. Options include a blind-spot monitor, a head-up display, side- and top-view cameras and a wireless phone-charging pad.
