The 2019 GMC Sierra 3500HD is available with a dual rear-wheel configuration that makes it the most capable pickup in the Sierra family. The truck then follows GMC’s upscale approach to content. This includes generous levels of equipment like a standard 7-inch infotainment screen and optional climate-controlled leather seats.
A full-size heavy-duty pickup, the Sierra 3500HD is available in a crew cab body style with room for up to six people. GMC offers a base model for 2019 along with SLE, SLT, All Terrain and Denali trim levels. Except for the All Terrain trim, all trucks are equipped with a V8 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. The Sierra All Terrain switches to standard four-wheel drive, which is an option for the other trim levels.
The GMC Sierra 3500HD carries over unchanged for 2019.
The brawny look for the Sierra 3500HD is highlighted by prominent fenders and a sculpted hood that flows into the truck’s vertical grille. The Sierra 3500HD is also available with 6-foot-6-inch and 8-foot cargo-box sizes.
The Sierra 3500HD comes standard with pickup-style equipment like front recovery hooks, rear corner-step bumpers, vertical trailering mirrors and a locking tailgate. Also standard are high-intensity discharge headlamps, LED signature lighting, daytime running lights and 18-inch steel wheels. Trucks with dual rear wheels ride on standard 17-inch wheels. Those with the optional diesel engine sport a standard hood scoop.
GMC offers available features such as a power sunroof, fog lamps, aluminum-alloy wheels and power-adjustable power-folding heated mirrors. The functionality options extend to assist steps, a damped tailgate, roof marker lights and LED cargo-box lighting.
The dashboard for the Sierra 3500HD has a contoured appearance on top, and that’s complemented by a separate hood for the instrument panel. The square shape of the truck’s center control console also gets set off by eye-catching trim. Facing the dash is a standard 40/20/40 front bench seat, while front bucket seats are available. A 60/40-split folding second-row bench is standard.
The Sierra 3500HD base model provides standard cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power door locks, manual windows and a steering wheel with integrated cruise controls and a tilt-adjustable column. The higher trims get increasing levels of standard equipment that reach their peak in the Denali model. That trim supplies standard heated and ventilated perforated-leather front seats with 12-way adjustability, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable pedals and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with a tilt-and-telescoping column.
You can choose between two V8 engines for the Sierra 3500HD. The standard 6.0-liter unit runs on gasoline and makes 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. A turbodiesel 6.6-liter engine is optional with 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. Each engine is paired with its own six-speed automatic transmission. The one for the diesel is sourced from Allison, a leader in the commercial transmission industry. Rear-wheel drive is standard except for the All Terrain model. That truck has standard four-wheel drive, which is available in the other trim levels. The Sierra All Terrain also benefits from a standard off-road suspension with trail-friendly tires.
Dual rear-wheel models can tow 20,000 pounds with the available diesel engine and conventional trailer package. If you opt for a gooseneck or fifth-wheel setup, the amount you can tow climbs to 23,300 pounds.
The EPA does not publish fuel economy ratings for the 2019 GMC Sierra 3500 HD and similar heavy-duty pickups.
The Sierra 3500 HD has standard technology like a rearview camera, a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, Bluetooth, an AM/FM stereo, USB/auxiliary connections and six audio speakers.
A Driver Alert Package is optional for the SLE and SLT trim levels, and it’s standard with the Denali model. This includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and front and rear parking sensors. The truck is also available with mobile Wi-Fi, a navigation system, an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless device charging, satellite radio, a premium Bose audio system and a rear-seat DVD/Blu-ray entertainment system.
