The 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL hits all the right beats as a modern-day mainstream people mover. It offers a full range of popular technologies for connectivity, driver assistance and functionality. A bold design helps the Santa Fe XL stand out from the rest of the herd.
The Santa Fe XL is a midsize three-row SUV that competes with models like the Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Highlander. Seating for seven is standard, and a six-seat cabin layout is optional. The Santa Fe XL is offered in SE, SE Ultimate and Limited Ultimate trim levels. A V6 engine, six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. All-wheel drive is available.
Although there are no changes to the vehicle’s equipment for 2019, the “XL” designation is new. Hyundai has rearranged its SUV family so that the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport becomes the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, while the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe is renamed the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL.
An aggressive face sets the tone for the Santa Fe XL’s exterior design. The look is highlighted by angry-eye headlamps and a wide lower intake that’s incorporated into the kickplate trim. From the side, the Santa Fe XL has a purposeful appearance, as if it were eager to hit the road and start searching for adventure.
The Santa Fe XL SE, which is the base model, comes standard with automatic projector-style headlights, LED front accent lights, LED daytime running lights, a rear spoiler with a built-in LED stop lamp, heated mirrors, dual chrome-tipped exhaust outlets, roof rails and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
Hyundai offers options such as adaptive high-intensity discharge headlights, LED taillights, a panoramic sunroof, a hands-free power liftgate and 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
The upscale dashboard of the Santa Fe XL isn’t very SUV-like, but it is extremely attractive. It features an overlapping upper level that flows seamlessly into the center stack. Also eye-catching are the large free-standing gauge binnacles for the instrument panel.
A 40/20/40-split folding bench is standard in the second row and the standard third-row setup is with 50/50-split folding seats.
The Santa Fe XL provides 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 40.9 cubic feet with the third row folded and 80 cubic feet with all rear seats folded.
Standard features include stain-resistant cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control and a multifunction steering wheel with a tilt-and-telescoping column.
The Santa Fe XL is also available with leather seating surfaces, climate-controlled front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, a heated second-row, second-row captain’s chairs and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The standard engine for the 2019 Santa Fe XL is a 3.3-liter V6. Producing 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque, the engine is matched with a standard six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Powertrain options include all-wheel drive.
The Santa Fe XL is capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. Models with front-wheel drive can provide fuel economy ratings of 18/25 mpg city/highway.
A multimode drive system is also standard. It has a dedicated “Sport” setting that makes the Santa Fe XL more fun to drive.
Available torque vectoring, which is part of the all-wheel-drive system, can further sharpen the ride. That technology gets the job done by automatically adjusting the power and braking distribution between the front wheels when you’re turning.
The 2019 Santa Fe XL is equipped with standard technologies such as a 7-inch infotainment display, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, HD Radio, satellite radio, a USB port, an auxiliary input jack and a six-speaker audio system. Available features include an 8-inch touchscreen, a navigation system, a third-row USB charging port and a 12-speaker Infinity sound system.
A rearview camera is standard, and many driver-assistance features are bundled in the optional Ultimate Tech package. It combines adaptive cruise control, automatic forward emergency braking, automatic high beams, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and pedestrian detection.
You can get additional options, too, like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors and a surround-view camera system.
"Even though it's a year old it still runs and looks like new. I love the size....big enough for good visibility but small enough so that I don't feel like I'm driving a tank. I miss a sunroof and a hands free tailgate .But I love the car " Read Less
