The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA is a car with a bit of an identity crisis. It has the styling of a two-door coupe yet actually has four doors. There’s no confusion about its benefits, though. The CLA offers popular luxury features and technologies, along with a dedicated high-performance model.
The 2019 CLA competes against premium compact sedans with a standard five-place interior. Two trim levels are available for 2019: CLA 250 and AMG CLA 45. Each model is equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a seven-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel is standard for the entry model, and the other two trims rely on standard all-wheel drive.
For 2019, the CLA 45 gains standard 19-inch wheels. The Premium and Convenience packages are also newly standard on the CLA 45, and they bring in notable features like heated front seats, blind spot monitoring and keyless access/ignition.
The CLA has a sleek, coupe-like roofline that’s accented by a streamlined shape with dramatic body-side sculpting. To make a sporty first impression, the CLA also wears an aggressive front-end design. Details here include a prominent Mercedes “star” in the grille, a large lower intake and carved fog-light pockets. The CLA 45 is distinguished by unique AMG design cues and aerodynamic upgrades. Those are available for the CLA 250 and CLA 250 4Matic. A notable design option for the AMG trim is a set of carbon-fiber mirror caps.
For standard content, the CLA 250 starts with automatic headlights, daytime running lights, heated exterior mirrors and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. LEDs are available for the headlights, daytime running lights, taillamps, brake lights and turn signals. You can get some upscale extras for the CLA as well. These include a panoramic roof, a hands-free trunk and a selection of 18- and 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
The CLA can’t quite match some rivals for standard content. For example, the 2019 Audi A3 has standard heated leather seats, which are optional for the CLA. A Mercedes advantage is the CLA’s striking interior design. You’ll find a clean dashboard that’s set off by large circular climate vents and a free-standing infotainment screen. The upper part of the dash also extends to create the instrument-panel hood as part of a full-length overhang. Mercedes offers premium materials, too. These range from genuine wood trim to stitched soft-touch surfaces on the top of the dashboard and door trim. You can further customize the interior with Mercedes option packages. To handle cargo, standard 60/40-split folding rear seats complement 13.1 cubic feet of trunk space.
The Mercedes does supply standard leatherette upholstery, 14-way power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and a leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel with a tilt-and-telescoping column. Also available from Mercedes are a flat-bottomed steering wheel and specific AMG content such as front sport seats.
The standard engine for the CLA 250 is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. It delivers 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque to the car’s front wheels. That’s more output than you’ll see in a comparable 2019 Audi A3. Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive system is optional.
The CLA 45 is tuned by the automaker’s AMG performance division. It features standard all-wheel drive, and in this application the 2.0-liter turbo is tuned to creates 375 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque in the AMG car. For maximum performance and the sharpest handling, an available AMG Dynamic Plus package includes a sport suspension, a limited-slip differential and a “Race” setting for the CLA’s multimode drive system. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is standard across the lineup.
The CLA 250 delivers up to an EPA-estimated 24/37 mpg city/highway, while the CLA 45 is rated at 23/30 mpg.
The 2019 Mercedes CLA provides standard safety technologies like automatic forward emergency braking, a drowsy-driver alert, forward collision warning and a rearview camera. Things are relatively basic when it comes to standard infotainment. The standard setup bundles an 8-inch display, a console-mounted controller, Bluetooth, a CD player, HD radio and a USB port.
Mercedes also offers adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assistance, blind spot monitoring and lane keeping assistance. Mobile Wi-Fi, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and satellite radio are standard on some mainstream cars, but optional for the CLA. As a Mercedes advantage, you can choose between Garmin and Mercedes navigation systems. A 450-watt Harman Kardon audio system is also available for premium sound.
