The 2019 Mercedes-Benz SL is an iconic luxury convertible that packs a robust punch under its long hood. Even with all the horsepower just a tap away on the accelerator, the SL stays true to its luxury roots with a ride tuned generally to comfort. It also provides a long list of safety features.
The SL is a two-seat hardtop convertible. It is offered in three trim levels: SL 450, SL 550, and Mercedes-AMG SL 63. The base SL 450 has a nine-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.
Mercedes-Benz has discontinued the AMG SL 65 for the 2019 model year. Aside from that, the Mercedes SL sees no major changes.
The 2019 SL has a wide stance from the front with a sleek profile when viewed from the side, especially when the hardtop roof is retracted. A touch of aggressiveness pops out from the front fascia thanks to a low-slung air intake, a wide diamond-block grille opening and large headlights. Overall, it’s a beautiful car that exudes luxury from all angles.
Standard exterior features include a power retractable hardtop that features a panorama roof with a tinted overhead panel. Also included as standard are 19-inch wheels and adaptive LED headlights. The SL’s exterior options are an electrically variable-tint roof panel and staggered 19-inch/20-inch wheels in a variety of designs. AMG exterior carbon fiber and night styling packages are also available.
Luxury defines the SL’s interior, where you’ll find an abundance of high-quality materials and outstanding fit and finish. Leg- and headroom are comfortable for even taller passengers. Meanwhile, power-adjustable heated seats with memory enhance the experience. The trunk has 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the top up and 8.5 cubic feet with it folded.
Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, a power tilt/telescoping steering column, a power wind blocker and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Interior trim options include a selection of satin and gloss woods, two colors of piano lacquer, natural bamboo, textured aluminum or carbon fiber. Also optional are active multi-contour seats with massage, a neck-level heating system and cooled seats.
The 2019 SL 450 has a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine with 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The SL 550 comes with a twin-turbo 4.7-liter V8 that provides 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard with both. The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 features a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 rated at 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. It uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Not that saving money at the gas pump is typically a concern of top-end luxury roadster buyers, but the SL has good fuel economy for this segment at 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. A start/stop feature that shuts the engine off at stop lights helps the SL earn these estimates.
The SL is at its most basic a touring car tuned more toward comfort. However, thanks to the standard feature called Dynamic Select, you have five options for handling: Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual. The optional AMG Dynamic Select package adds a Race mode, as well as Curve Dynamic Assist, which tilts the SL into curves to avoid excessive body roll.
The SL wouldn’t be a Mercedes-Benz without its treasure trove of standard technology. Among the standard features are a 7-inch color central screen, a Harman Kardon sound system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a navigation system with three years of no-charge map updates, dual USB ports, satellite radio, HD Radio and voice control with learning feature. There’s also five years of SiriusXM Traffic and Weather service and a dashtop analog clock, because not all of the luxury is high tech. Optional technology includes a Bang & Olufsen sound system, soft-close doors and a wood/leather steering wheel.
Safety technology is also something else that sets the SL apart. Standard features include a backup camera, front and rear parking sensors, forward collision warning with automatic braking, a drowsy driver alert and pre-safe, which has a feature that can protect your ears from the noises associated with a collision. Optional safety tech includes blind spot assist, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, cross-traffic alert and rear collision detection and preparation.
