Whether you want to sit in the lap of luxury or enjoy hot laps at the track, the 2019 Porsche Panamera can satisfy your requirements. The Panamera sets itself apart from typical high-end sports cars by providing the practicality of two four-door body styles. As a potential environmental benefit, Porsche offers an electrified powertrain.
The Panamera is the full-size flagship of the Porsche car family. It’s available as either a five-door hatchback or as a station wagon that’s known as the Panamera Sport Turismo. The former has seating for four, the latter can fit five. There are also hatchback Executive models that ride on a stretched wheelbase.
Beyond the Panamera base model, you can choose from Panamera 4, Panamera 4S, Panamera GTS, Panamera Turbo, Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid trim levels. Among the top rivals for the Panamera are large luxury cars like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series and Audi A8.
The Panamera’s standard powertrain features a turbocharged V6 engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Options include a twin-turbocharged V6, a twin-turbocharged V8, a plug-in hybrid system and all-wheel drive.
The Porsche Panamera GTS trim is new for 2019.
Porsche’s DNA comes through loud and clear with the Panamera’s exterior design. Despite its extra doors, the Panamera shares the same curvy good looks as the iconic Porsche 911 coupe. Parallel character lines across the Panamera’s body add a sharp contrast to the rest of those rounded cues. The Panamera Executive model has a similar look but is about 6 inches longer.
The Sport Turismo body style is redesigned from the rear doors back for a longer roof and slightly more wagon-like shape. That said, Porsche skips the traditionally vertical rear tailgate for a dramatically angled appearance.
Standard features include LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, heated power-folding mirrors, a power-deployable rear spoiler, a panoramic roof and 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The Panamera is also available with upgraded adaptive LED headlights, a hands-free tailgate, soft-close doors, aerodynamic body pieces and 20- and 21-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
The clean look of the Panamera’s dashboard is modern and artistic, with the entire dash, including the instrument panel and climate vents, set inside one large single frame.
Besides the dashboard’s attractive look, the setup minimizes distractions so you can focus on the driving experience. One long continuous console splits both the front and the back seats in the Panamera hatchback. The Sport Turismo also has a small, middle rear seat that’s suitable for short trips.
Both body styles allow you to put down the rear seat backs for maximum cargo capacity. In the hatchback, the Panamera has 17.6 cubic feet of storage behind the back seats and 47.3 with those seats folded. The Sport Turismo provides 18.4 and 49 cubic feet in comparable configurations.
Porsche offers standard equipment such as partial leather upholstery, heated eight-way power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with a tilt-and-telescoping column.
The Panamera also offers options including full leather upholstery, heated and ventilated 18-way power-adjustable massage-function front seats, power-adjustable heated and ventilated rear seats, four-zone automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel and wood, carbon-fiber and aluminum trim.
The Panamera relies on a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 as its standard engine. That unit produces 300 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque.
With the Panamera 4S, a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 is standard. It has 440 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque.
The next step up is the Panamera GTS, which is equipped with a standard twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. With that you can enjoy 453 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque. The Panamera Turbo dials up 550 horsepower and 567 pound-feet of torque from the same V8.
Porsche delivers a plug-in driving experience with the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. The first builds on the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 for a total of 457 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. In the second, the starting point is a biturbo V8 from the Turbo trim. This combines with the hybrid system’s lithium-ion battery and electric motor for 677 horsepower and 626 pound-feet of torque.
An eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard, while all-wheel drive is optional.
The fastest and quickest Panamera is the Turbo. When equipped with the optional Sport Chrono package, that version can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 190 mph. The most efficient is the hybrid. It offers 23 mpg in combined driving and a 14-mile all-electric driving range. The fuel economy ratings with the standard powertrain are 19/27 mpg city/highway.
All models showcase sport-tuned handling. You can sharpen the Panamera’s reflexes further with options like Chassis Control adaptive-suspension technology.
Standard technologies for the Panamera include a 12-inch touch screen, mobile Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, satellite radio, HD Radio, a USB port, an auxiliary input jack and a 10-speaker audio system. Also standard is a semi-digital instrument cluster with two screens flanking an analog tachometer.
Porsche also features infotainment options such as night vision and separate Bose and Burmester audio systems. It includes a rear-seat entertainment package that bundles two 10-inch touch screens, a camera for video calling and access to Google Play apps.
A rearview camera along with front and rear parking sensors are standard as well. They can be complemented by driver-assistance options like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance.
