Many rivals find it hard to compete with the 2019 Subaru Legacy. As one advantage, the Legacy is one of the few cars in the segment with all-wheel drive. It also has an impressive array of standard technology. Premium seating and a high-end sound system are among the Legacy’s notable options.
Subaru’s midsize Legacy sedan provides space for five people. For 2019, the Legacy trim levels are 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited and 3.6R Limited. The standard powertrain features a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and a four-cylinder engine. All-wheel drive is standard in all models.
This year’s Legacy benefits from significant tech upgrades for both driver assistance and infotainment systems.
A crisp exterior design gives the Legacy a sophisticated appearance. Highlights include a sculpted hood and detailed front end. There, an aggressive grille is accented by dramatic headlights and bold fog-light pockets. Flowing, two-piece taillights add flair at the rear. Upper trims can also have exclusive design cues. For example, the 2.5i Sport has spoilers for the trunk and rockers, and the 3.6R finishes with dual exhaust outlets.
The 2019 Legacy matches up well against the competition in terms of standard equipment. With the Legacy 2.5i entry trim, you get halogen headlights, LED daytime running lights, power-adjustable mirrors and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The higher trim levels can provide adaptive LED headlights and LED fog lights. A power moonroof, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, windshield-wiper de-icers and heated mirrors with integrated turn signals are available as well.
The Legacy’s cabin is attractive and comfortable. The molded upper-level of the dashboard is especially stylish. It creates a bold setting for the trapezoid-shaped center-stack interface and the driver-friendly instrument panel. With 15 cubic feet of cargo space, the Legacy also offers a larger trunk capacity than the 2019 Toyota Camry. To extend that cargo space, the Legacy has standard 60/40-split folding rear seats.
Standard content is typical for the segment. That means equipment like cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, air conditioning and a multifunction steering wheel with a tilt-and-telescoping column. As you move up the trim levels, you can find a number of mainstream comforts. These include leather-trimmed upholstery, heated front seats, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated rear seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Another difference-maker with the Legacy is its boxer-style engine design. Both of its power plants have two banks of cylinders, like V-type engines. In the Legacy, however, the cylinder banks are pushed flat. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine for the Legacy makes 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. The optional 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine produces 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Each engine has a specific CVT, and all trim levels are configured with all-wheel drive.
The standard fuel economy ratings for the 2019 Legacy are 25/34 mpg city/highway. Those ratings are significantly better than what you’ll find with the all-wheel-drive 2019 Ford Fusion.
The Legacy welcomes the Subaru EyeSight package as standard content for 2019. EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward automatic braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assistance. A rearview camera is also standard. A newly standard infotainment system features a 6.5-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, satellite radio, HD radio, USB/auxiliary connectivity and four speakers.
Subaru offers more technology in the upper trims. They can supply reverse automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and automatic high beams. You can benefit from more infotainment content, too. Leading the way are a navigation system, an 8-inch touch screen and a 576-watt Harman Kardon audio system.
