The 2019 Toyota RAV4 comes with one of the segment’s most comprehensive technology packages, which bundles plenty of connectivity and driver-assistance features. The 2019 RAV4 also is more powerful and more efficient than past versions. What will really get your attention, though, is a fresh design that makes this model the most rugged-looking RAV4 yet.
A compact SUV, the 2019 Toyota RAV4 seats five. It’s available in LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Adventure and Limited trim levels with a gasoline-only powertrain. The LE, XLE and Limited trims also offer a hybrid powertrain, and the XSE trim is available only as a hybrid. With the standard powertrain, the RAV4 provides a four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is optional. The hybrid powertrain switches to a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT) with electrically enabled all-wheel drive.
Past RAV4 generations have emphasized their crossover roots with sleek designs and minimalist grilles. The 2019 model shatters that reputation by showing off an especially complicated and aggressive front end. One highlight is a large lower intake that looks like it’s set inside a protective brush guard. Toyota also kits out the RAV4 with thick molded trim around its wheel openings and skid-plate-style trim for both bumpers.
Standard features include LED headlights, LED taillights, power-adjustable mirrors, dual chrome exhaust tips, roof rails and 17-inch covered steel wheels. With the Adventure trim, the RAV4 shows off a more robust appearance for its upper grille, roof rails and bumpers. The RAV4 is further available with LED daytime running lights, fog lights, puddle lights, a power sunroof, a hands-free liftgate, 17- through 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and heated mirrors with built-in turn signals.
The 2019 RAV4’s cabin is clean and modern, highlighted by a multilevel dashboard that’s separated into distinct horizontal layers. Structural details, such as the deeply carved door panels and the trim around gear-shift console, offer high-tech industrial flair. The standard 60/40-split folding seats can be pushed flat to create a cargo capacity of 69.8 cubic feet. You’ll still get 37.6 cubic feet of storage space with those seats in use.
Base models are equipped with fabric upholstery, a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, a four-way manually adjustable front-passenger seat, climate control and a multifunction steering wheel on a tilt-and-telescoping column. The RAV4 also is available with leatherette upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated outboard second-row seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Under the hood of the 2019 Toyota RAV4 is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available. The system includes automatic torque vectoring to adjust power delivery between the rear wheels and the ability to automatically disconnect the rear wheels from the driveline entirely. That lets the AWD RAV4 operate in front-wheel-drive mode for increased efficiency when maximum grip isn’t needed.
The RAV4 hybrid relies on the same engine and adds a nickel-metal hydride battery, a CVT and two electric motors. The first provides assistance to the RAV4’s gas engine, and the second can power the rear wheels when you need all-wheel drive. The hybrid model might be the most fun to drive RAV4 as well. It delivers 219 horses, and the hybrid-only XSE trim rides on a standard sport-tuned suspension.
When properly equipped, the Adventure trim can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Fuel economy ratings start at 26/35 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive and 27/34 mpg city/highway with all-wheel drive. The hybrid edition is rated at 41/38 mpg city/highway.
The 2019 RAV4 welcomes a standard Entune 3.0 infotainment system with mobile Wi-Fi, an app-based navigation system, Apple CarPlay, Google Assistant compatibility, Amazon Alexa compatibility, Bluetooth, a 7-inch touchscreen, a USB port and a six-speaker audio system. Also available are wireless charging, an integrated navigation system, an 8-inch touchscreen, a digital speedometer, satellite radio, HD Radio and a JBL sound system that combines 11 speakers and 800 watts of power.
Standard safety technology includes adaptive cruise control, automatic forward emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane centering assistance, lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, pedestrian detection, traffic sign recognition and a rearview camera. You can add options such as automatic reverse emergency braking, a blind spot monitor, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera system and a digital rearview mirror, which uses a rear-facing exterior camera that sends video to a monitor in the rearview mirror frame.

User Reviews for 2019 Toyota RAV4
by 2nd time RAV4 owner on June 8, 2020
"Front Driver seat needed to be replaced due to defective stitching. Part fell out of Driver side mirror . Poor interior lighting. Window buttons not lite hard to see at night. Gas tank door latch hard to find"
"Plus...This RAV4 is a gas sipping, true hybrid, AWD 45 mpg at 20000 miles.
Negative...It is really hard to completely fill the fuel tank. It has to be filled slowly or it will be 2 gallon less than full."
Well laid out and pleasant to drive on long distances.
Very edgy with plenty of led lighting for improved night driving. Loaded with safety features.
You must remember It is an AWD hybrid not a Ferrari
Great for 4 adults. Ample rear cargo space
Way cheap on gas. 25000 mile Toyota Care makes it a winner.
