The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon features an attractive European design, a spacious interior and strong performance.Blurring the lines between sedan and hatchback, the Arteon’s impressive cargo space gives the mid-size car SUV-like utility. Premium features help make this Volkswagen flagship a worthy alternative to other options.
The Arteon is an all-new model for 2019. The luxury small-car sedan seats five people. It’s available in six trim levels: SE, SE 4Motion, SEL, SEL 4Motion and SEL Premium 4Motion. Volkswagen’s “4Motion” designation represents all-wheel-drive models. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard.
The Arteon replaces the previously discontinued CC model.
The Arteon has a low, wide stance that gives the car an authoritative look. A wide chrome grille and sculpted LED headlights blend into the contoured roof and coupe-inspired fastback.
It has a wheelbase that is more than five inches longer than the CC it replaces. The new flagship also has shorter front and rear overhangs than its predecessor. The sleek, sporty design is aerodynamic and yields a low coefficient of drag, which enhances performance.
All Arteon trims include standard LED headlights, daytime running lights and taillights. SE and SEL models include 18-inch alloy wheels. SEL models get adaptive headlights and SEL Premium models include puddle lights on the side-mirrors.
Other options include 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof and a power trunk. R-Line trims include R-Line badging, gloss black air intakes and a gloss black rear spoiler.
The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon’s spacious cabin is practical and comfortable. Its clean design and upscale materials create an inviting interior. Both front and back seat passengers have ample legroom and headroom. The 12-way power adjustable front seats are heated and provide excellent support. Up to three adults can comfortably sit in the back seats.Leatherette seats are standard. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift are included on all models.
The Arteon has 27.2 cubic feet of storage. Fold down the standard 60/40-split rear seats and cargo space grows to 55 cubic feet. For reference,
Additional standard features include three-zone automatic climate control and rain-sensing wipers. Options include leather seating, ventilated front seats, heated rear seating and a massage function on the driver’s seat. A heated steering wheel with paddle shifters is included in the top-trim SEL Premium.
R-Line models are equipped with contrast stitching on the steering wheel and shift knob, a black headliner and stainless-steel pedals and door sills.
The Arteon’s long wheelbase and standard adjustable suspension contribute to its comfortable, responsive ride. The turbocharged engine provides excellent mid-range power, especially for highway passing.
The Arteon is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels. All-wheel drive is available. Volkswagen has engineered the small turbocharged engine to deliver excellent power and fuel economy. A standard start/stop system saves fuel by turning off the engine when its idle or stopped for extended periods.
The EPA rates front-wheel-drive models at 22/31 mpg city/highway. All-wheel drive models are rated at 20/27 mpg city/highway.
The Arteon is equipped with a long list of standard technology. An 8.0-inch touchscreen display controls the vehicles infotainment system. The eight-speaker audio system include HD radio and satellite radio. Bluetooth and two USB ports enhance the system with smartphone connectivity. Standard App-Connect provides Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink. An optional “Discover” media system includes navigation and additional connectivity options.
