The 2019 Volkswagen Passat supplies more rear-seat legroom and trunk space than the best-selling cars in its segment, along with a wide range of technologies. It also wears a sophisticated European design. The result is a family-friendly mainstream car that’s disguised as a German sport sedan.
The VW Passat is a midsize car that seats five. The lineup features only Wolfsburg Edition and SE R-Line trim levels, both of which are new for 2019. Each is equipped with a turbocharged engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
As a result of the trim changes, the base Passat now has more standard features than last year’s model. This includes automatic forward emergency braking, bigger wheels, a bigger infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The 2019 Passat has an upscale but understated appearance with a high roof and a traditional sedan shape. The Passat also plays it safe with a simple two-bar grille that sweeps back into its low-profile headlights. It’s a pleasant contrast to the look-alike coupe-style roofs and overly complicated front-ends you see on a lot of the competition.
The Wolfsburg Edition is named for the German city where VW has its global headquarters, and it comes with automatic headlights, heated mirrors and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. An option package for the Wolfsburg model provides 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and a power moonroof that’s standard for the SE R-Line. That trim further includes LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, a hands-free trunk, a sport-styled front bumper, a rear diffuser and 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
The upper part of the Passat’s dash features a smooth surface that’s punctuated by only the climate vents and a compact instrument panel. A large single piece of trim frames the center stack and spreads its wings across the dashboard’s lower level. It all works together to give the Passat a professional, buttoned-down look.
The standard rear seats have a 60/40 split and can be folded for extra cargo versatility. The 2019 Passat also has a trunk capacity of 15.9 cubic feet, which is over 10 percent more than what you get in a 2019 Toyota Camry.
Standard equipment includes leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a manual climate system, chrome trim, push-button start and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The SE R-Line model adds dual-zone automatic climate control, carbon-look trim, unique door-sill protectors and stainless-steel pedal caps.
The Passat offers a comfortable ride, but its driving dynamics are still composed enough to keep the journey entertaining. All 2019 Passat models have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain also includes a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
The fuel-economy ratings for the Passat are 25/36 mpg city/highway. Yet key rivals like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord are more powerful and more efficient.
The Passat’s standard infotainment system includes a 6.3-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, HD Radio, satellite radio, an AM/FM stereo, a USB port, a CD player and an SD-card slot. An upgraded Fender audio system is optional.
VW offers standard driver-assistance technologies such as automatic forward emergency braking, a blind spot monitoring system, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert and a rearview camera. You can also get the Passat with available equipment like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance and front and rear parking sensors.
