The 2020 BMW M4 blends performance, technology and luxury into a stylish, performance-oriented sports car. It’s equally at home zooming around a racetrack or taking its passengers for a spirited drive to the grocery store. This two-door coupe has spacious rear seats and trunk space.
The automaker based the M4 on the 4-Series coupe, but the M4 has a more aggressive feel and look. The M4 is available as a two-door coupe and a convertible. The four-door variant of the M4 is called the M3 sedan. The M4 seats up to four. A V6 engine, manual transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard. A dual-clutch automatic transmission is available. The M4’s chief competition include the Mercedes AMG C63.
Although the M4 shares the same overall design as the regular 4-Series, the sports car is wider and wears a much more aggressive face that mimics the M3 sedan. The M4’s performance is underscored by the large bulge on the hood and the rear quad exhaust outlets. The M4 convertible has a retracting metal roof. The coupe saves weight with a plastic roof that’s reinforced with carbon fiber. The M4 boasts BMW’s iconic kidney grille and rear Hofmeister Kink (low forward bend) are apparent on the M4.
Standard exterior features include LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, heated side-view mirrors and a sport exhaust system with quad tailpipes. A moonroof, carbon-ceramic brakes, 20-inch wheels and black-chrome dual tailpipes are some of the available options.
The M4 has an opulent cabin. The center console and infotainment screen are slightly skewed toward the driver. Although the M4 is a tech-forward sports car, it has analog gauges that are a nod to its driver-focused approach. Passengers in the front are treated to well-bolstered seats that are comfortable. The back seats are tight for some adults.
Standard equipment includes an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front sport seats, leather upholstery, 14-way power front seats, a three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and automatic climate control. Available features include a power rear sunshade and a heated steering wheel.
The M4 features a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine that produces 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is available. Opting for the Competition Package boosts performance to 444 horsepower. Rear-wheel drive is standard.
Fuel economy for the M4 is rated at up to 18/25 mpg city/highway. Despite having an extra 19 horsepower, the M4 Competition has the same fuel economy as the entry-level M4.
The M4 comes with a competitive list of standard tech features. The features include a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, satellite radio, an HD radio, Apple CarPlay and BMW’s iDrive infotainment system. Standard equipment also includes navigation, an 8.8-inch touchscreen, a 20 GB hard drive, a rearview camera, remote keyless entry, front and rear parking sensors and forward collision warning. A head-up display, a wireless charging pad and Wi-Fi hot spot capability are available.
