The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu is a well-rounded sedan that stands out thanks to sporty styling and a fuel-efficient base powertrain. With its smooth ride, the Malibu is a great highway cruiser. Plus, less-than-tech-savvy drivers will enjoy one of the easiest infotainment systems to use on the market.
The Malibu is a midsize sedan that’s available in five trims levels: L, LS, RS, LT and Premier. All trims can seat up to five people. There’s a choice of two turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The standard transmission is a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). A nine-speed automatic is available. Front-wheel drive is the only layout available.
For 2020, Chevrolet discontinued the hybrid version of the Malibu.
Blending sporty elements from Chevrolet’s performance vehicles with a sweeping design, the Malibu is one of the more aggressive-looking midsize cars. The front end has two grilles that give the Malibu a unique look on the road. Slim headlights help break up the grille-heavy front end and lead into a sculpted hood. A raked rear windshield flows into a round rear-end design that has large oval, wraparound taillights.
Standard exterior features include 16-inch wheels, automatic headlights, power-adjustable exterior mirrors and daytime running lights. Available packages include 19-inch wheels, a sunroof, LED headlights, heated exterior mirrors, dual exhaust outlets and LED taillights.
The Malibu’s interior is modern and inviting, and the cabin places an emphasis on ease of use. Large buttons and dials on the center console make HVAC and infotainment system use a breeze. All of the sedan’s seats are spacious. Material quality is upscale and the cabin features plentiful nice-touch materials.
Dual-zone automatic climate control, a manual tilt-and-telescopic steering column, cloth upholstery, a six-way manual driver’s seat, power windows and door locks are standard. Available features include leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, ventilated and heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and dual-zone automatic climate control.
There are two turbocharged four-cylinder engines to choose from with the Chevy Malibu. The base engine is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The 1.5-liter engine is paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Premier trims come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard with the 2.0-liter engine. Front-wheel drive is standard.
The EPA rated fuel economy for the Malibu equipped with the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine at 29/36 mpg city/highway.
Chevrolet packs the Malibu with a strong list of tech features as standard. An 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, a six-speaker audio system, remote keyless entry, a 12-volt power outlet, traction control, stability control, OnStar and a rearview camera are standard.
A Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, wireless charging, a USB port and a Bose nine-speaker audio system are among the available features. Adaptive cruise control, parking assist, blind-spot monitoring, lane change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, following distance indicator, automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection are among the available driver assistance features.
