The 2020 Kia Sportage is a stylish and lively small crossover SUV. The trim-topping SX Turbo, which comes with a turbocharged engine, is especially quick. The Sportage also provides a roomy and comfortable interior, and a generous array of standard features, including high-tech accident avoidance systems.
Available in LX, S, EX and SX Turbo trim levels, the 2020 Kia Sportage seats five. It’s powered by either of two four-cylinder engines, one of which is turbocharged, paired with an automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available. The Sportage competes with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and the Mazda CX-5.

The 2020 Kia Sportage is cleanly styled, with muscular wheel arches and flowing lines running from front to rear. Kia’s signature grille resides above a wide lower air dam. High-mounted cat’s-eye headlamps extend upward and into the front fenders. They include LED daytime running lights and automatic high beams. There’s a large rear spoiler above the back window and narrow taillamps that horizontally into the Sportage’s hatchback. The rear bumper is trimmed in chrome at the bottom and anchors dual exhaust tips.
Power-folding heated side mirrors are included on all versions but the base model. Depending on the trim level, the Sportage rides on either 17-, 18- or 19-inch wheels. The exterior can be upgraded with fog lights, roof rails, a power tailgate and LED headlamps, taillights and turn signal indicators. All trims can be fitted with a front fascia with a 28-degree approach angle for hill climbing.
Echoing the sheet metal, the 2020 Sportage’s interior also is neatly designed. Large and legible gauges face the driver, and an 8-inch touchscreen for the vehicle’s infotainment system rests at the top center of the dashboard above rows of buttons and dials for the audio and climate control systems. The cabin is reasonably roomy in the front and rear. The Sportage provides 30.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the 60/40-split rear seatbacks upright and a generous 60.1 cubic feet with them folded flat.
Cruise control and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel are standard, as are three 12-volt power outlets. Cloth seats are standard, and leatherette and genuine leather upholstery are available. Interior options include dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, a 10-way power driver’s seat, an eight-way power passenger’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The S and SX turbo versions include stainless steel trim and sport pedals.
Under the hood of the 2020 Kia Sportage is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. The top SX Turbo version packs a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that generates an energetic 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard across the line. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. The SX Turbo version comes with a specially tuned suspension that enables improved cornering abilities. Towing capacity is 2,000 pounds when the Sportage is properly equipped.
Fuel economy is an EPA-rated 23/30 mpg city/highway with the base engine and 20/28 mpg city/highway with the turbocharged powerplant. Those figures dip to 20/28 mpg city/highway and 19/24 mpg city/highway, respectively, with all-wheel drive.
The 2020 Kia Sportage offers a long list of convenience, connectivity and safety features. A six-speaker sound system is standard, and it comes with voice recognition, Bluetooth, Kia’s UVO telematics system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces. Satellite radio and navigation are optional. A 320-watt Harmon Kardon audio system with eight speakers is optional on the EX and standard on the SX Turbo.
Standard driver-assist features are plentiful and include forward automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with lane keeping assist and a driver attention warning. A rearview camera is standard. Front and rear parking proximity sensors are optional on the LX and standard on the SX Turbo. A blind-spot warning system with cross-traffic alert is optional on the base model and standard elsewhere in the line.
