Updated for 2020, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque remains a smart and sassy SUV. It’s also quite stylish, in part because of its sharply sloped roofline, and it’s a willing companion for off-road adventures. And, of course, it brings Land Rover’s brand cachet.
The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is a compact crossover that seats five. It features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. It’s offered in S, SE, R-Dynamic S, R-Dynamic SE and R-Dynamic HSE trim levels. For 2020, it’s also available in a posh First Edition trim. The Evoque competes with the Audi Q5, BMW X4, Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and the Volvo XC60.
The Evoque is restyled inside and out for 2020. Its new interior borrows cues from the larger Range Rover Velar. The 2020 Evoque also debuts the marque’s new 48-volt mild hybrid system.
The 2020 Range Rover Evoque receives smoother styling that retains the vehicle’s signature coupe-like roofline. Finned air vents and thin LED headlamps flank a slim version of the brand’s honeycomb grille. There’s muscular wheel arches at all four wheels, hideaway door handles and smooth lines flowing from front to rear. A tailgate spoiler and LED taillights reside at the back. The First Edition comes with a black roof. The Evoque rides on 18-inch alloy wheels, and 20- and 21-inch wheels are available or included with higher trims.
All 2020 models include auto-dimming power-folding mirrors. Available features include xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights, automatic high beams, fog lights, rain-sensing wipers and a heated windshield and washer jets. An optional gesture-operated power tailgate works by waving one’s foot under the rear bumper. A Black package includes a gloss black grille and exterior trim items.
The 2020 Range Rover Evoque’s interior is cleanly cast and features high-quality materials. There’s sufficient room up front for taller riders, and while rear seat space is tight, that’s expected in this size class. The Evoque can tote 21.5 cubic feet of cargo with the 40/40/20-split rear seatbacks in place and 50.5 cubic feet with them folded.
Dual-zone climate control and 10-way power leather seats with 14- and 16-way adjustments are available. R-Dynamic models come with metal brake and accelerator pedals. The First Edition version is trimmed with copper accents. Buyers can choose between aluminum or wood trim surfaces in lower trims, and other upgrades include power heated, cooled and massaging front seats, a panoramic sunroof, heated and power-adjustable steering wheel and configurable ambient lighting.
The 2020 Range Rover Evoque’s base engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 246 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. R-Dynamic trims incorporate a 48-volt mild hybrid system that gives it a modest boost to 296 horsepower and 205 pound-feet of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard. An available adaptive suspension enhances the vehicle’s ride and handling abilities. Its fuel economy is rated at 20/27 mpg city/highway with the base engine and 21/26 mpg city/highway with the hybrid version.
Land Rover’s Terrain Response II system includes specific modes for traversing gravel, snow, mud and ruts. All-Terrain Progress Control is essentially a low-speed off-road cruise control. In terms of its off-road specs, the Evoque features an 8.35-inch ground clearance and a wading depth of 23.6 inches.
The Evoque can tow nearly 4,000 pounds. An optional Advanced Tow Assist system lets the driver control the direction of a trailer while in reverse via a rotary dial.
The 2020 Range Rover Evoque offers many tech-minded features. A six-speaker audio system is standard, and a 10-speaker Meridan system is available. The standard 10-inch infotainment system touchscreen can be upgraded to dual 10-inch displays. The vehicle’s infotainment system includes full smartphone connectivity, with standard Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces. An optional ClearSight ground-view monitor displays multiple exterior angles, including the vehicle’s underside and wheels. Other available features include a navigation system, a head-up display, a self-parking function and a rearview camera display mirror. An available wearable Activity Key precludes the need to carry a key fob.
Standard safety features include a backup camera and front/rear parking warnings, a lane keeping system and low-speed forward automatic braking. Options include 360-degree proximity alerts, a rear cross-traffic monitor, and a Clear Exit monitor to warn passengers of oncoming traffic as they open a door. High-speed automatic braking, adaptive cruise control and a blind-spot warning system also are offered.
