The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar strikes a stylish profile with a raked roofline, and it treats its occupants to a comfortable and decidedly high-tech cabin. The Range Rover Velar also possesses Land Rover’s renowned off-roading abilities, should owners choose to take away off the pavement.
A midsize luxury sport utility vehicle, the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar seats five people. The Velar is offered in S, R-Dynamic S, R-Dynamic HSE and SV Autobiography Dynamic Edition trim levels. It’s powered by a four-cylinder, V6 or V8 engine, depending on the trim. All models come with an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. It competes with the Audi Q5, BMW X5, Jaguar F-Pace, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and the Porsche Macan.
For 2020, the Land Rover Range Rover Velar adds the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition as its top trim.
The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar is distinctively cast and boasts a nicely proportioned body. Its curvy front end is capped with a large and wide honeycomb-patterned grille that sits atop a broad lower air dam. The grille is flanked by narrow automatic LED headlamps with Z-shaped running lights. The Velar’s roof slopes gently rearward and comes in black or the body color. A rather stubby tail features a tailgate spoiler and narrow LED taillights that run into the rear fenders. The door handles are flush with the body until the vehicle is unlocked, and they include integrated approach lights.
The Velar comes with a solar attenuating and acoustic laminated windshield, rain-sensing windshield wipers and a power-operated tailgate. Base models ride on 19-inch alloy wheels, and the top two trims get 21-inch wheels. R-Dynamic models feature specific front and rear bumper designs, and exterior trim touches. The Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition gets red brake calipers, front fog lights and quad tailpipes. Roof rails, power deployable side steps, a heated windshield and a gesture-operated tailgate are optional.
The 2020 Velar’s leather-clad interior is handsome and richly finished. A smoothly styled dashboard features analog gauges, narrow air vents and stacked dual touchscreens at the center. There’s 34.4 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the 40/20/40-split folding rear seats, and 70.1 cubic feet of storage space overall.
Standard features include 14-way power front seats and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. You also can get either 18- or 20-way heated, cooled and massaging front seats, depending on the trim level. The cabin can be upgraded with various wood trims, heated and cooled front seats, four-zone climate control, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel and a cooled glove box. An interior upgrade package comes with chrome trim, metal pedals, a suede-cloth headliner, illuminated scuff plates and adjustable ambient lighting.
The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar offers a choice of four engines, depending on the version. A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine comes standard on S and R-Dynamic trims and provides 250 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. A supercharged 3.0-liter V6 with 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque is available. The R-Dynamic HSE gets a 380-horsepower version of the 3.0-liter V6. Meanwhile, the top SV Autobiography trim is equipped with a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 with 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. That’s good for a 4.3 second 0-60 mph time. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard across the line.
Fuel economy for the four-cylinder engine is EPA-rated at 21/27 mpg city/highway. Those figures drop to 18/24 mpg with the V6 engine and 15/20 mpg with the V8.
Like other Land Rovers, the all-wheel-drive Velar can be configured to tackle the toughest trails. It can wade in water up to 25.5 inches deep. The available Dynamic Handling pack includes Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2 system with selectable driving modes for specific on- and off-road conditions. It also features configurable and adaptive driving dynamics, and all-terrain progress control, which is like a low-speed off-road cruise control. The V6 and V8 versions include an air suspension that automatically lowers the Velar by 1.6 inches when parked for easier entry and exiting.
The Land Rover Range Rover Velar offers a wealth of technology. An 11-speaker Meridian sound system with Bluetooth, satellite radio and HD Radio is standard. R-Dynamic HSE and SV Autobiography trims get 17-speaker and 23-speaker versions, respectively. The SV Autobiography also comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Other standard features include keyless access and keyless start, navigation and cruise control with a speed-limiting function. Available features include a wearable keyless access device, a 360-degree backup monitor, a rear-seat entertainment system and a head-up display.
A blind-spot monitor and traffic sign recognition come standard, as does a driver condition monitor that gives an alert if it senses the motorist is becoming drowsy. The vehicle also can be equipped with adaptive cruise control with steering assist, a forward emergency brake system, front and rear park assist, lane-keeping assist and a rear cross-traffic alert monitor.
