The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE is an apex predator of the SUV world, using both brains and brawn to overcome its competition. To keep you comfortable in the cabin, the GLE offers lavish high-end features that wouldn’t be out of place in a flagship luxury sedan.
A midsize SUV, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE comes standard with two rows of seating for up to five people. An optional third row expands the seating capacity to seven. You can choose between GLE 350 and GLE 450 trim levels for 2020. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard, as are a nine-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. Powertrain options include a turbocharged six-cylinder engine and four-wheel drive. The Mercedes-Benz GLE coupe is similar to the GLE SUV, but with a more dramatic roofline. Top rivals include the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne.
The GLE is all new for 2020.
Taut sheet metal and forward-angled roof pillars create a dynamic appearance for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE. The low, lunging stance is emphasized by subtle contours along the GLE’s body. A stylized octagon frames the grille, which sits above what looks like a full-width lower intake and a chrome-plated bumper guard. It all comes together for an aggressively sophisticated road presence.
Standard features include LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED taillamps, a power sunroof, aluminum roof rails, 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, a hands-free tailgate and heated power-folding mirrors with built-in turn signals. Mercedes supplies options such as adaptive headlights, a high-performance AMG body kit, a power panoramic roof and aluminum-alloy wheels up to 22 inches in diameter.
The high-tech cabin of the 2020 GLE is anchored by two side-by-side display screens that are housed in a driver-centered dashboard. This futuristic highlight is complemented by a structural floor console with a substantial gear-shift lever. A 40/20/40-split folding rear seat is standard in the second row, and a 50/50-split folding third row is optional. Mercedes’ attention to craftsmanship is noticeable throughout the cabin.
Standard features include leatherette upholstery, heated power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with a power-adjustable column. The GLE also is available with leather upholstery, climate-controlled massaging front seats, heated power-adjustable second-row seats, heated front armrests, heated door panels, climate-controlled front cupholders, four-zone automatic climate control and a heated leather-and-wood steering wheel.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 255 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is available.
A turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine is standard in the GLE 450. It produces 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes’ EQ Boost technology also is standard with the six-cylinder unit, boosting efficiency and providing a jolt of power through a mild hybrid setup. As a result, the GLE 450 can zip from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and has a maximum tow rating of 7,700 pounds.
The GLE bolsters its off-road credibility with a standard air suspension and the E-Active Body Control system. With that, the GLE can adjust the suspension performance at each individual wheel for optimum handling in almost any conditions. The system can even automatically rock the GLE free if it gets stuck in loose sand or similar conditions
The 2020 GLE shows off standard technology such as the MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a navigation system, Bluetooth, HD Radio and a FrontBass audio system with footwell subwoofers. The MBUX Interior Assistant is optional and allows you to control certain vehicle functions with hand and arm gestures. The GLE also is available with tech options such as mobile Wi-Fi, wireless charging, a head-up display, satellite radio, TuneIn Radio and a 25-speaker Burmester sound system with 1,590 watts of power.
Standard driver-assistance technology includes automatic forward emergency braking, automatic parking assistance, a blind spot monitor, a driver attention monitor, a rearview camera and a cross-wind assistance feature that lessens your steering efforts when driving in breezy conditions. Among the GLE’s options are adaptive cruise control, automatic forward emergency braking for cross-traffic situations, automatic evasive steering, automatic high beams, lane departure alert, lane centering assistance, lane changing assistance, a surround-view camera system and speed limit assistance.
