Don’t judge the 2020 Nissan Versa by the reputation of its older siblings. This model year Versa is a segment leader in standard safety technology and boasts features such as automatic reverse emergency braking that aren’t readily available in any segment. Plus, the Versa has a modern design, comfortable ride and competitive levels of performance.
The 2020 Nissan Versa is a subcompact sedan that can seat up to five passengers. Choices include S, SV and SR trims. The standard powertrain is a four-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is available.
The 2020 model year marks the debut of the all-new third-generation Versa sedan. It competes against new and used sedan versions of the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent and Toyota Yaris. A hatchback variant of the Versa, the 2020 Nissan Versa Note, is reviewed separately.
Key Nissan style cues give the Versa a sophisticated new exterior. Highlights range from a V-shaped grille frame to a floating rear roof. The 2020 Versa is also longer, lower and wider than last year’s model. Those features combined with dynamic body lines give this model year Versa an athletic vibe.
Standard equipment includes projector-style halogen headlights, power-adjustable mirrors, a faux carbon-fiber rear diffuser and 15-inch covered steel wheels. Options include LED headlights, signature-style LED daytime running lights, mirror-mounted LED turn signals, fog lights, heated mirrors, a rear spoiler and 16- and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.
The Versa’s layered dash has a broad, flowing shape and a sporty instrument-panel treatment. Its gauges are nestled in a hood-within-a-hood design. A nearly flush-mounted infotainment panel emphasizes keeps the dashboard uncluttered. Cargo space ranges from 14.7 to 15 inches, depending on the trim.
With the entry-level S trim, standard features include cloth upholstery, a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, a four-way manually adjustable front passenger seat, air conditioning, cruise control, power accessories and a D-shaped multifunction steering wheel on a tilt-and-telescoping column. Available equipment includes upgraded cloth upholstery, heated front seats, a leatherette-wrapped dashboard, automatic climate control, 60/40 rear folding seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The Versa is powered by a standard 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. A CVT is optional on the base model but standard with the SV and SR trims.
The EPA rated Versa fuel economy with the manual transmission at 27/35 mpg city/highway. The CVT increases the EPA grades to 32/40 mpg city/highway.
Nissan significantly updated Versa’s suspension. The Versa has more confident handling due to a 12% increase in horsepower and a 7% increase in torque.
Standard equipment on base models and other trims include a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, three USB ports, an auxiliary input jack, an AM/FM stereo and four speakers. Satellite radio, a six-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available.
