The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is a subcompact crossover SUV that seats five people. It’s meant for those who prefer the added spaciousness and practicality of an SUV versus a same-size sedan – and for those who require the added surefootedness of all-wheel drive (AWD).
What Makes It Unique?
The Crosstrek is essentially a Subaru Impreza wagon with higher ground clearance and styling cues that make it look more like an SUV. All-wheel drive is standard, and the vehicle comes with a full suite of advanced driver-assist systems. Like most Subaru models, it comes powered by a so-called “boxer” engine in which two rows of cylinders are configured in horizontal opposition to each other rather than in alignment, as with most other 4-cylinder engines. The Crosstrek is also one of the few SUVs to still offer a manual transmission. There is also a plug-in hybrid Crosstrek that we regard as a separate model.
Chevrolet Trax: Korean-built small SUV that suffers from a cheap-looking interior and dull driving dynamics; its upscale relation, the Buick Encore, is a better choice.
Kia Soul: The Soul lacks all-wheel drive but packs plenty of personality, with a richly cast cabin and a peppy turbocharged model.
Mazda CX-3: Arguably the most fun-to-drive model in the class, it nonetheless lacks backseat space and cargo room.
Toyota C-HR: Wildly styled, it comes standard with several advanced safety systems, but it’s front-drive only.

What’s New for 2020?
EyeSight suite of driver-assist features, driver-selectable SI-Drive powertrain performance management system, and an engine auto stop/start function are now standard on CVT-equipped models.
A rear-seat reminder feature, meant to help drivers avoid leaving a child or pet behind, is newly optional.
Automatic door locks and automatic climate control now standard.
2020 Crosstrek vs. Older Crosstreks
The current-generation Subaru Crosstrek debuted for the 2018 model year and shares its underpinnings and components with the Impreza sedan and wagon. Before that it was last updated for 2016, when it replaced the XV Crosstrek in Subaru’s lineup. You could save money by choosing a used Subaru Crosstrek, though not all models will have key safety features like forward automatic emergency braking.
If you can afford it, the top Limited model adds a few extra safety features, as well as amenities like LED exterior lights, leather upholstery, proximity keyless access with push-button start, and a power driver’s seat.
2020 Subaru Crosstrek Performance
The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek has one available engine:
152-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a 6-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and AWD
Compared with the class? It’s about average in this regard. If you have a need for speed, you may want to consider the Kia Soul’s GT-Line trim and its 201-horsepower turbocharged engine.
