When the Audi A5 arrived for the 2008 model year, the sporty coupe made an impression on consumers and the media by bringing a near perfect mix of style, luxury and performance. Audi has kept the same essential formula for almost a decade. With some simple refinements including the introduction of a soft-top A5 Cabriolet in 2010, the attractive all-wheel-drive A5 continues to provide an excellent balance of performance, efficiency and curb appeal.
Since its introduction, the Audi A5 has gone through minor styling updates and a variety of available powertrains. Despite these evolutionary changes, the A5 has not been fully redesigned since its launch for the 2008 model year.
When it debuted, the Audi A5 was available solely as a two-door, four-passenger coupe. The original A5 was powered by a 3.2-liter V6 engine, which is paired with all-wheel drive and either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.
For the 2010 model year, the A5 Cabriolet was introduced and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine became standard equipment.
In 2011, Audi dropped the V6 from the A5 lineup and replaced the six-speed automatic with an eight-speed automatic transmission that provides improved fuel economy. Front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) became standard on the A5 Cabriolet, while all-wheel drive and the eight-speed automatic were optional on convertible models (2015 and newer A5 convertibles gained standard all-wheel drive and the eight-speed transmission.)
The A5 is decidedly a luxury car and the base trim includes alloy wheels, tri-zone automatic climate control, leather seating and a sunroof. Its interior and exterior styling were updated for the 2013 model year, bringing in changes that include a new front fascia, instrument cluster and steering wheel design. The 2013 A5 also brought in new technology with options such as blind spot monitoring and Audi Connect, which uses a data connection to provide a Wi-Fi hot spot and Google search. Standard features like Bluetooth and proximity key with push-button start were added for the 2014 model year.
The Audi A5 was launched as a direct competitor for the BMW 3 Series coupe and convertible, which are now represented by the BMW 4 Series. The entry-level luxury coupe and convertible segment is also occupied by the Infiniti G and Q60, depending on the year, as well as the Lexus RC.
