Audi’s TTS aims for a high-performance sweet spot: It’s more powerful than its stylish sibling, the TT, but it maintains more everyday usability than the hardcore TT RS. The TTS also hits the bull’s-eye for advanced technology.
2016 to Present: Audi TTS
The second-generation TTS continues to offer two Avant-garde body styles. The curvaceous coupe provides seating for four. The convertible AKA Roadster has a two-seat cabin layout. Either way, drivers should enjoy the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that can send almost 300 horsepower through a dual-clutch automatic transmission. All that power is kept under control thanks to standard Quattro all-wheel drive and a sophisticated suspension. The result is an enthusiastic performance to go with the TTS’ futuristic appearance. At the same time, the TTS is efficient enough to earn an EPA rating of 25 mpg in combined driving.
Audi brings a high-tech approach to the cabin of the TTS. The highlight is a “Virtual Cockpit” that replaces the traditional instrument panel with a 12.3-inch display screen. It’s like having an infotainment screen complete with navigational views right in front of drivers behind the wheel. The screen shows digital versions of conventional gauges, too. Other notable technology for the second-generation TTS includes mobile Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a Bang & Olufsen audio system, a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring and an infotainment touchpad that recognizes handwriting. Later models feature Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and wireless charging.
The TTS runs with German sports cars like the BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLC and Porsche Boxster/Cayman, all of which join the TTS in focusing more on driving excitement than on driver-assistance technology.
Earlier Audi TTS Models
Launched in 2009, the first-generation Audi TTS set the template with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an automatic transmission, Quattro all-wheel drive and coupe and convertible body styles. Audi tweaked the first-gen TTS during the rest of the car’s production run, most notably in 2011. That’s when the TTS was restyled to look more like the Audi R8 supercar.
