Introduced for the 2017 model year, the Chevrolet Bolt wants to revolutionize the electric vehicle marketplace by offering plenty of utility and performance. It also offers an impressive driving range and a price that will fit many consumers’ budgets.
Realizing the need for a nicely appointed and affordable electric vehicle that offers significant driving range, Chevrolet designed the Bolt EV from the ground up. By starting with a blank slate, the automaker was able to play to the EV’s strengths without compromising its structure or design. The Bolt’s long wheelbase provides plenty of room for a large battery pack, which acts as a structural element that contributes to the Bolt’s torsional stiffness.
That long wheelbase also affords plenty of interior space, rivaling what’s offered by some midsize cars and extending the Bolt’s usefulness to families looking to replace a compact crossover or midsize sedan.
The Chevy Bolt is powered by an electric motor that produces 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. The Bolt uses an all-new shift-by-wire system that instantaneously manages power and torque by reading accelerator inputs and drive mode selection. The electric motor is extremely efficient and provides excellent acceleration. Zero to 60 mph takes less than 7 seconds, and the Bolt can travel up to 200 miles on a fully charged battery.
While the Bolt’s somewhat spartan interior is a compromise between comfort and weight savings, it provides plenty of niceties for a vehicle that is confined to 200-mile treks. It’s loaded with excellent standard technology features, including a sizeable center display and an additional screen for the instrument cluster. The center display has more in common with a tablet than the traditional touch screens available in many of today’s vehicles. By using straightforward gestures, occupants can control many of the car’s systems, explore the vehicle’s efficiency and range and connect a smartphone with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. A third screen, located in the rearview mirror, provides a real-time view of what is going on immediately behind the car.
General Motors’ OnStar telematics system, which features an integrated Wi-Fi hot spot, is front and center in the Bolt. The system is easy to use and can provide data to multiple devices with more authority than a smartphone connection. As you would expect, the Bolt uses the Internet connection to enhance the drivability and user-friendliness of the vehicle.
The Chevy Bolt comes with a full complement of air bags and a high-strength steel frame for occupant safety. Available safety features include forward collision alert, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. GM’s OnStar system includes helpful advisors and automatic crash response.
The Bolt competes in a growing segment of compact hybrid and electric vehicles, including the BMW i3, Kia Soul EV, Ford Focus Electric and Nissan Leaf.
