The Chevrolet HHR, or Heritage High Roof, is a compact wagon that was inspired by a late-1940s-era Chevrolet Suburban design. This front-wheel drive model seats five, and was sold for 2006-2011 model years.
The Chevrolet HHR was introduced as a retro-styled wagon that offered modern engineering. It is based on the same architecture underpinning the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5 and Saturn Ion compact sedans. This squared-off, four-door model is marked by a broad grille, sturdy wheel haunches, a long roofline and rectangular rear windows.
Throughout its six-year model run, the Chevy HHR was powered by a family of four-cylinder engines. A 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine making 143 horsepower was standard with the base model, while a 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine was found in the upper trim levels. Both engines are paired with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.
Upon its debut, the Chevrolet HHR was offered in LS, 1LT and 2LT trim levels. Standard features included power windows and door locks, as well as a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, cruise control, cloth seats, air conditioning, a six-speaker audio system, 12-volt outlets and an auxiliary audio port. Options included an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and an upgraded sound system.
For 2007, Chevrolet increased performance slightly for both engines, upping the 2.0-liter’s output to 149 horsepower and boosting the 2.4-liter’s output to 175 horsepower. A two-seat panel wagon was also released with commercial use in mind.
Beginning in 2008, Chevrolet introduced the HHR SS, which comes with a 260-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, Brembo brakes and a limited-slip differential. All HHR models received General Motors’ OnStar telematics system as standard equipment that year, while stability control was made available.
For 2009, side curtain air bags, antilock brakes and stability control were made standard. All models now included satellite radio, while Bluetooth connectivity became available.
Few changes were made for 2010 other than the addition of an optional rearview camera.
