The Chevrolet SS is a full-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan. Originally from the land down under, the Chevy SS gives many cars a run for their money with a powerful V8 engine, sharp handling and large amount of standard equipment. For those who want something that looks unassuming but packs quite a punch, the SS is worth a look.
When General Motors wanted to create a full-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan with V8 power, the automaker had two options: Start from scratch with an all-new model or use an existing platform with a car that’s sold elsewhere. GM went with the latter option and plucked the Holden Commodore from Australia to build the Chevrolet SS.
Previously, GM had called on Holden to provide the likes of the 2004 to 2006 Pontiac GTO and the 2008 to 2009 Pontiac G8. For the Chevrolet SS, GM used the latest version of the Holden Commodore sedan and changed a few things to make it just right.
One area that hasn’t changed in its trip from Australia to the U.S. is the exterior design. Park a Chevrolet SS next to a Holden Commodore and the only real difference is different badges. Both models feature smooth and flowing exterior styling, which has been criticized by some for being somewhat generic. However, that design plays a role in making the SS very unassuming, essentially masking its true capabilities.
Power comes from a 6.2-liter V8 engine with 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. This is fed to a six-speed automatic transmission. That combination allows the Chevy SS to hit 60 mph in about five seconds.
The Chevrolet SS comes in one trim level that offers few options, but a wealth of standard equipment. All models include 19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, xenon headlights, keyless entry, push-button start, automatic wipers, dual-zone automatic climate control, a Bose audio system, Bluetooth, ventilated front seats and an 8-inch touch screen with navigation and Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system.
Fort 2015, Chevrolet added a couple of new features to improve the performance of the SS. These include the introduction of GM’s Magnetic Ride Control suspension system, which helps deliver thrilling handling and a smooth ride in daily driving. The other change was the availability of a six-speed manual transmission.
