The Infiniti QX50 arrived on the scene for 2014, but the model isn’t new. It was sold as the EX35 from 2008 to 2010, and as the EX from 2011 to 2013. Naming convention changes notwithstanding, rear-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available for this sporty, five-passenger luxury SUV.
2014 to Present: Infiniti QX50
Debuting in 2014, the Infiniti QX50 assumed the brand’s latest naming convention, with “Q” representing cars and “QX” identifying SUVs. In each case, a two-digit number follows, corresponding roughly to the size and cost of each vehicle. Thus, the former Infiniti EX, once known as the EX35, is now the Infiniti QX50.
The Infiniti QX50’s front fascia features a long, horizontal grille with chrome trim. Stylish wraparound headlamp assemblies, a sporty lower grille opening and fog lamps are also present. The QX50 has a muscular presentation with its sculpted hood and powerful shoulders.
This SUV’s roofline recedes, not unlike a sports car, finishing with a distinct rear spoiler. From the sides you’ll notice an even beltline, multiple character lines, body sculpting, chrome trim and fashionable alloy wheels.
At the rear, the QX50 features large wraparound combination lights, as well as a convex rear window, reflector lights, chrome trim and dual exhaust ports.
Inside, the cabin offers seating for five. Interior room for the 2014 and 2015 editions is tight, but more space is offered beginning in 2016 as Infiniti added 3.2 inches to the SUV’s wheelbase. The change benefits rear passengers by adding much-needed legroom.
Standard equipment includes keyless entry with push-button start, power-adjustable front seats, a rearview monitor, dual-zone automatic climate control, satellite radio and Bluetooth.
The 2016 QX50 gained a refreshed exterior, bringing in new LED lights, an updated grille, revised alloy wheels and new bumpers. An Around View monitor system also became available.
All Infiniti QX50 models are powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine making 325 horsepower. A seven-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard and all-wheel drive is optional.
Standard cargo volume measures 18.6 cubic feet behind the second-row seat. With the second row folded, this model has 47.4 cubic feet of storage capacity.
Upon its debut in 2008, the Infiniti EX35 was available in base and Journey editions. All models are outfitted with a 297-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine that’s paired with a five-speed automatic transmission.
Standard features like a power-adjustable driver’s seat, automatic climate control, satellite radio and a sunroof were standard at launch.
Beginning in 2011 and lasting through 2013, the EX35 was sold as the Infiniti EX. The V6 returned with its same performance rating, but was now paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. For 2013, the Infiniti EX received a new 3.7-liter V6 that makes 325 horsepower.
The 2011-2013 Infiniti EX offered dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery and a rearview camera as standard equipment. Available features include Bluetooth, navigation and various safety features, including lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning.
