The Infiniti QX80 is a full-size, body-on-frame luxury SUV. Available in two- and four-wheel drive configurations, this model was initially released as the QX56 in 2004. It has since been updated and its name changed to align with Infiniti’s current naming convention.
2011 to Present: Infiniti QX56, QX and QX80
The current generation Infiniti QX80 made its debut in 2011 as the QX56. For the 2012 model year it was renamed the QX, dropping its previous QX56 nomenclature. Two years later it was renamed the QX80. Seating for seven or eight is available.
Until 2015, one trim level was available with the Infiniti QX80 and several package options offered. Beginning in 2015 a QX80 Limited edition was released, uniting five package offerings and adding interior upgrades to one edition.
Infiniti offers one powertrain combination for the QX80: a 5.6-liter V8 engine paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. That engine makes 400 horsepower and has an output of 413 pound-feet of torque. Its fuel economy comes in at an EPA-estimated 14/20 mpg city/highway.
All QX80 models are equipped with automatic headlamps with high beam assist, LED turn signals, LED front fog lights, a front skid plate, running boards, a sliding moonroof and a power liftgate.
Inside, the cabin features aluminum kick plates, leather-wrapped seating, burl or ash wood trim, heated front seats, power-adjustable front seats with lumbar support, second row captain’s chairs and a power-operated 60/40 split-folding third-row seat.
A 13-speaker Bose audio system is standard and comes with MP3 capability and a CD/DVD player. Bluetooth wireless technology, SiriusXM satellite radio, a USB port and auxiliary input jacks are also included.
All models also come with a voice-activated telematics system with an 8-inch color display. Tri-zone automatic climate control, power accessories, a power tilt and telescopic steering column, power outlets, nine cup holders and four beverage holders are included.
The Limited edition brings in unique floor and trunk mats, an Ultrasuede headliner and pillars and leather covered grab bars. A DVD theater package, second-row heated seats, a 15-speaker Bose audio package, advanced safety features, a wheel package and hydraulic motion control are included.
No safety tests have been conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, all models come equipped with a suite of air bags, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, stability control, traction control and four-wheel anti-lock brakes. Lane departure warning and prevention, blind spot warning and intervention and backup collision intervention are available as options.
The first-generation model was also powered by a 5.6-liter V8 engine. This engine made 315 horsepower and was paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. One trim level was available with various packages offered. That first model was prized for its power, roomy interior, capable towing capacity and for its rear parking monitor. Limited third-row seating, less than stellar cabin materials and a thirsty powertrain were its chief cons.
