The Jeep Renegade was introduced for the 2015 model year. The Renegade is the smallest Jeep made since the original Jeep CJ was sold after the end of World War II.
The Jeep Renegade is part of a growing segment of subcompact crossovers and SUVs. It shares the same platform with the Fiat 500X and is built alongside it at the same plant in Italy. This small SUV is the first Jeep sold in this country that’s built on another continent. Jeep also positioned the Renegade as a global product that is sold in over 100 markets worldwide. Jeep Renegade pricing is also flexible, thanks to four unique trim levels at launch. The base model should appeal to buyers who focus on value. Top-tier models provide commendable off-road capability or upmarket features in a small package. The Renegade has a lot of design attributes that are common in the Jeep lineup. These include a seven-slot grille and a raised stance. It is also boxy, just like its big brother, the Jeep Wrangler. The Renegade is a four-door model with an upright liftgate. The optional My Sky roof system uses a key to unlock the panels for a true open-air experience. Jeep’s design language continues inside. Rugged details include design cues like a topographical map on several storage surfaces. A tall greenhouse makes outward visibility is impressive from the driver’s seat. The Renegade’s instrumentation features accents that are color coordinated with the body. The front seats are roomy, and the second row offers impressive space as well. Cargo space is expandable by folding the rear seat. Straightforward audio and climate controls are found on the center stack, and Jeep offers several Uconnect infotainment system options. All models come with power windows, power door locks, a USB port and a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel. The Renegade’s small size and efficient powertrain choices deliver impressive fuel economy. That’s no small feat considering the Renegade’s level of off-road capability. Two available engines power the Renegade. Those choices include a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission. There’s also a larger 2.4-liter four-cylinder with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard and a four-wheel-drive system is available. The four-wheel-drive system comes with a terrain selector with different drive modes. The Renegade features off-road capability that’s unusual for a subcompact SUV. An available Selec Terrain system can tailor the driving experience for a variety of conditions, including snow, sand and mud. Beefy skid plates and available tow hooks make Trailhawk models quite capable off-road. The Renegade Trailhawk also offers features like hill descent control, which improves its ability to travel off the beaten path. Opt for four-wheel drive and the Renegade is the only vehicle in its class with a two-speed transfer case and low-range gearing. Available safety features include forward collision warning, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring and a rearview camera. Anti-lock brakes, stability control and seven airbags are standard. The Renegade gained a few options for the 2016 model year. These include a new premium audio system and rain-sensing windshield wipers. A notable upgrade for the 2017 Jeep Renegade was the introduction of standard push-button start. Convenient features like automatic high-beams also joined the options list.
A backup camera became standard on the 2018 Renegade, while new tech features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were added to the options list. The Jeep Renegade competes with subcompact SUVs like the Honda HR-V, Chevrolet Trax, Mazda CX-3 and Fiat 500X. There’s no doubt that some of these models may offer more refinement or practicality. That said, a two-speed transfer case and rugged styling help the Renegade distinguish itself from the rest.
