The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque takes the luxury of the iconic Range Rover and puts it into a smaller, sportier shape. The result is a vehicle that is more in tune with fuel-conscious times and buyers who want all of the sport, but don’t need the utility, of a luxury SUV.
Introduced for the 2012 model year in both three- and five-door configurations, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque was initially powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 240 horsepower, an unusually small engine for Land Rover. A six-speed automatic transmission mated to a four-wheel drive system is the only option for the Evoque. Land Rover’s Terrain Response system is standard, allowing drivers to choose pre-selected modes for driving on pavement, snow, rocks or sand.
Standard equipment typically consisted of power front seats, leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels and an 8-inch color touch screen. Hard-drive-based navigation, a fixed panoramic glass roof with a power shade, satellite radio, heated front seats and a power liftgate are common options.
For 2013, the Range Rover Evoque five-door became slightly less expensive with the introduction of the Pure trim level. An automated parking assist feature was introduced as a new option.
The Evoque gained a new nine-speed automatic transmission and an engine stop-start system for 2014, boosting fuel economy figures to 21/30 mpg city/highway. The park assist feature gained skills to pull the SUV out of a parallel spot, as well as park it perpendicularly. Another new trim, Pure Premium, was added to bundle features such as navigation and blind-spot monitoring together.
For 2015, a new Autobiography Dynamic trim was added. This model has a 285 horsepower version of the 2.0-liter ending and larger front brakes. A regular Autobiography trim, also in five-door-only format, features further upgraded trim and wheels. All models offer Land Rover’s InControl apps to support smartphone connectivity with the vehicle’s infotainment functions.
The 2016 Range Rover Evoque gets a facelift that includes a revised grille and available LED lights, as well as a revised interior design, improved materials and Land Rover’s latest touch-screen infotainment system.
Rivals include the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, but the Evoque tends to occupy a more athletic, more prestigious position thanks to its branding and image.
